"Oscar Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London’s most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. At the height of his fame and success, whilst his masterpiece, “The Importance of Being Earnest”, was still on stage in London. Wilde published The Happy Prince and Other Tales in 1888, and had been regularly writing fairy stories for magazines. “The Portrait of Mr. W.H.”, which Wilde had begun in 1887, was first published in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine in July 1889, it is a short story. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six."
