Swar and Vyanjan — The Two Families

Hindi varnamala has two families: 13 swar (vowels) — अ, आ, इ, ई... — and 33 vyanjan (consonants) — क, ख, ग... Together they make 46 letters and the whole language.

The trick to teaching them? Make it play, not study.

Start With Swar (Always)

Vowels come first because they form barakhadi (the matra system) later. Teach 2–3 a day with picture words: आ से आम, ई से ईख.

When ready to write, our Hindi Sulekh Varnmala (₹130, ages 4–8) guides correct strokes for every swar and vyanjan. littlescholarz

6 Fun Swar–Vyanjan Activities

  1. Letter hunt: Hide flash cards; child finds "क".
  2. Playdough letters: Roll dough into letter shapes.
  3. Sand/atta tray: Write letters with a finger.
  4. Sing-along: "अ आ इ ई" and "क ख ग घ" tunes.
  5. Picture match: Match क to a कबूतर picture.
  6. Body letters: Make letter shapes with arms.

Move to Vyanjan Gradually

Don't dump all 33 at once. Start with easy ones — क, ग, ब, म — then build up. Pair each with a familiar Hindi word.

Why Activities Beat Rote

Children learn letters far better through movement and pictures than through repetition. And when they write letters by hand, recognition gets stronger — research links handwriting to better letter recognition. So let them trace, mould and draw.

Then Build Words

Once letters are familiar, move to Hindi Sulekh Shabd (₹130) for words and matras. Pair with a Hindi Varnamala board book from our Board Books collection.
