What 2–3 Year Olds Are Learning

This is a golden age. Between 2 and 3, children explode with new words, love naming everything, and enjoy the same book over and over. Your job is simple: feed that curiosity.

At this stage children begin "imitative reading" — finishing familiar lines. When you read "Twinkle, twinkle, little..." and pause, they shout "star!" That's literacy growing.

What to Choose for This Age

  • Sturdy board books (they still handle books roughly).
  • First-word and picture books with bold, single images.
  • Flash cards for naming games.
  • Rhymes — Indian toddlers adore repetition and sound.

2. Pick-any board book set: The Big Board Books Set of 3 (₹550) — choose Animals, Fruits and Numbers.

How to Make Reading a Habit

  • Same time daily — bedtime is golden.
  • Let your child "choose" the book.
  • Use voices and actions.
  • Keep it short — 10 minutes is great.

Don't Stress About Letters Yet

At 2–3, the goal is love of books and lots of words — not reading. Letters and sulekh come a little later. Right now, talk, point, name, and cuddle.

FAQ

1. Should a 2-year-old know the alphabet? No pressure. Exposure is good, but mastery isn't expected until 4–5.

2. How long can a 2-year-old focus on a book? A few minutes. Follow their lead and stop before they tire.

3. Are flash cards okay at this age? Yes, for naming and play — not for drilling.

4. My toddler wants the same book daily. Is that fine? Absolutely — repetition is exactly how toddlers learn language.

5. English or Hindi books for a 2-year-old? Both work beautifully. Bilingual exposure is a strength.
